Artist Statement

Painting for me is a daily exercise in creativity, release, anticipation and humor.  I'm influenced by everyday shapes and characters (real or imagined) and giving them a happy twist of color and whimsy.  I enjoy playing with different techniques and using texture to bring movement and interest to my surface.  Layering, building on color, whether it means adding more paint, paper, pencil or fabric all adds to the overall character of the painting.  I even embrace odd shapes and the occasional slip of the wrist.  To me, it all adds movement and dimension and visual interest to my final piece.

Living up in the mountains has given me a new perspective on nature and the ability to find fun interpretations of what is just outside my back door.  Not only our majestic mountain vistas and gorgeous sunsets that find their way into my paintings, but also, our beautiful black bears.  They have provided me a subject matter with such character that never gets old and just becomes more fun with each iteration.  Good stuff for the soul and happy art for the heart.
